I have twenty-five years computer programming experience and I'm also the author of a science fiction comedy series and a new middle-grade science fiction comedy for ages 9-12. I'm Simon Haynes, the designer and programmer. (Although yWriter was designed for novels, enterprising users have created their own translation files to customise the program to work with plays, non-fiction and even sermons.) Now imagine that same novel at 40,000 or 80,000 words! No wonder most first-time writers give up. I mean, all you have to do is type everything into a word processor! Sure, but wait until you hit 20,000 words, with missing scenes and chapters, notes all over your desk, characters and locations and plot points you've just added and which need to be referenced earlier.

If you're just embarking on your first novel a program like yWriter may seem like overkill. YWriter5 is free to download and use, but you're encouraged to register your copy if you find it useful.

yWriter was designed by an author, not a salesman! It will not write your novel for you, suggest plot ideas or perform creative tasks of any kind. YWriter is a word processor which breaks your novel into chapters and scenes, helping you keep track of your work while leaving your mind free to create. I’m glad I can see the awful within that movie.YWriter is a powerful writing program which is free to download and use. There are two scenes within that that are entirely yellow highlighted as I hate how it reads and will have to totally rewrite them. But jumping into the mess and fixing what already played out as a movie in my mind, I miss a lot, and fixing things just doesn’t come easily. I love the adventure of imagining a new story.

I have a few of my other books set up with the same goal because I might feel like moving around. And as I enter it into a new yWriter7 project, I can count the word as I paste the worked-out bit in. In this case, I can find my book, Haven Above and Beyond, open it in Word, and then use Grammarly to help me weed through and make a better version, if not rewrite the whole thing to make more sense. So I consistently save the day’s writing in that program to RTF. I am nothing but redundant in my saving my WIP. I wrote this and Haven back when the program was newish. So for my own accountability, I’m keeping track of words as I add my second Haven book back into the newest version of Writer. It helps to have these things to try to kick me in the butt to get my editing and more writing done.
